* Schanzen-Zen Hamburg, September 2015: Brad Warner is in Hamburg and screens his movie "Hardcore Zen", a documentary about himself as "unorthodox" zen-punk-monk-master. Two days later, he is offering a meditation day. Unfortunately, I cannot particiapte due to other obligations I have on that day. During the discussion following the movie screening, Brad appears to be a likeable and down-to-earth guy and I have the opportunity to talk to him after the event (see picture below).

* Domicilum Weyarn bei München, June 2018: I sit in my room in the mediation house in Domicilum and look doubtfully at the schedule of the three-day zen retreat with Brad Warner. That is quite an overwhelming amount of sitting and walking meditation. Added to this there is the working meditation and other words in Japanese, I do not know what this is all about. Do I really want to do this in my well-deserved vacation time?

* It is a moderate retreat, there are no prohibitions (Smartphone, books). Good for someone like me who had not joined multi-day retreats before. We are asked to spend the 3 days in silence for the majority of time but it is allowed to talk about things concerning organisational issues.

* Domicilium is located near a forest and surrounded by a wonderful garden on a slope. Birdsongs and the croaking of frogs are ubiquitous, one day I even see a ring snake. House and garden are designed with plenty of attention to detail. The very tasty vegeterian food is also decorated with herbs and blossoms from the garden.

Recreation/restaging of Dokusan

* First off, it seems like Brad needed a wee bit time to become comfortable with something and somebody (what I know very well myself) but then he is the likeable guy I remember from 2015 (and from his You Tube Videos). He is a real good listener during Dokusan (one-on-one conversation). In one of his talks he tells us that he really tries to listen to the other person he is talking to during a conversation instead of thinking about what he wants to say next while the other one is talking - which is how most of us usually act in conversations. My impression is that he lives what he teaches. So, during my relatively long Dokusan time flies …

* Speaking of time, time is a strange thing. As mentioned above, sometimes it flies, some other time it feels like it drags on forever like a bubble gum (as we say in German). When your bones start aching on top of that, time seems to stand still.
After a quite unpleasant "sitting" follows another, the last one for this evening. A nightingale sings its wonderful song into the meditation hall. Now time goes by double-quick again. On the next day, Brad is wondering what kind of bird it was he heard the night before. We are figuring it out togehter.
Time and again, I listen carefully whether the nightingale recites its beautiful song. During the very last minutes of our last sitting meditation of this retreat, the nightingale sings until just before the bell rings. As if it wanted to tell us Goodbye!
(At the end of this entry, right after the "Haiku", I uploaded non-professional recordings of the weird nightingale songs.)

"What's so funny bout peace and love and understanding" berühmt geworden durch Elivs Costello.
Woohoo!!! ;)

* On his leave-taking talk, Brad is performing his "bird songs". After the last walking Meditation he comes in with a guitar. A couple of nights before, he dreamed of a song he is sharing with us now. "What's so funny bout peace and love and understanding", a song made popular by Elvis Costello. I did not know that song before but I like the lyrics right away.
Of course, Brad cannot leave without playing encors so that he is playing songs of his band Zero Defex and - to my great joy - "Purple Haze" and "Voodoo Chile" by Jimi Hendrix. Woohoo!!! ;)

* I rejoice at each individual who participated in our relatitively small group as well as at erveryone at Domicilium who made this all possible. I thank Brad that he undertook the tribulations of coming to Europe. I am glad that I let myself in for this small adventure. I thank my husband for accompanying me from Northern Germany to Bavaria and staying in a guesthouse nearby. And I thank the birds and all the other garden creatures, especially the nightingale!
