Irrglauben / Misconceptions (Meditation)

*[EN] I saw this picture at the bakery while having lunch on Friday. I like it although this imperative reflects a misconception. You will never manage the brain to shut up completely. And that is not even a "goal" you have while medidtating. Here is a quote by Charlotte J. Beck what meditation is about:

"We 'rid ourselves of conceptual thought' when, by persistent observation, we recognize the unreality of our self-centered thoughts."

So, you do not want to free your mind of all thoughts completetly but to see that your brain activity is just about having thoughts, thoughts that are just thoughts, not reality.

You can learn about further misconceptions on meditation here. The highly recommendable book "Mindfulness in Plain English" by Bhante Henepola Gunaratana includes a chapter on such misconceptions as well. I have read the book recently and I am quite impressed about the clarity the author manages to describe the subject of meditation!

David Swenson Ashtanga Yoga Workshop

*[EN] After two years of Ashtanga Yoga Practice together with "my" teacher only, I attended an Ashtanga Yoga class for the first time yesterday at Power Yoga Germany (I had attended Hatha yoga classes before). For the first time in Hamburg and with David Swenson - one of the most famous yoga teachers nowadays. Hence, I was a little bit excited, however I was curious as well.
My doubts whether this class was the right one for me dissipated quickly when David replied in his light-hearted manner and with a lot of humour to questions and introduced the subject of the class "FLYING FLOATING AND HANDSTANDING". From time to time he demonstrated asanas. I was immediately enthralled since it was worth participating in this class for seeing these asanas live in this way alone. It is different, indeed, to see an experienced practicioner live (instead on youtube) lifting
his whole body with his hands alone in various positions in a controlled manner. And it looks so easy!

*[EN] The hints and tricks he showed us and all the many partner exercises, making the body feel how it could feel if you might be able to do it on your own some day in the future were quite helpful. I also learned that all exercises with the body being in the air and the hands on the floor are handstands. In Ashtanga Yoga it begins i.e. with the sun salutations (when jumping), jumping through and back in vinyasas, in bakasana (the crow) etc. We also practiced the classic handstand in groups of four but that was a little bit intimidating for me ...
Additionally, David showed us variations for "jumping through". His message was that it is not about being able to jump through perfectly. It is important to have fun. You should not approach the practice in a grimly manner, you should not practice 6 days a week when it does not feel good. You should practice with humour and fun. The teachers he had learned the most from were those teachers with lots of humour. David proved to be such a teacher! Fortunately, "my" yoga teacher teaches in this manner as well.

Thank you David, I cannot wait to try everything I learned on my mat at home. :)
